How it works

  1. See a new word

Each new word appears with its meaning and a few example sentences, and you hear it spoken. You learn how it sounds as well as what it means.

  2. Type what it means

Soon after, you type what the word means in your own language, from memory. If you get it wrong, you see the answer and type it in yourself. Recalling a word helps it stick better than just reading it again.

  3. We bring it back at the right time

Solveig keeps track of what you know. Words you get right come back after longer and longer gaps; words you struggle with come back sooner. This method, called spaced repetition, is backed by research.

Start with the words that matter most

In every language, a small set of words does most of the work. The most common French words come up in almost every sentence you will read or hear, as the chart shows.

That is why Solveig starts with the most common words. Each one you learn unlocks a large share of real sentences, so you start to understand real conversations sooner instead of spending months on words you will rarely meet.
