Solveig’s French core contains 5,000 distinct French words ranked by usage, plus retained entries from the original starter deck. This is a corpus-based selection, not a universal or exhaustive ranking of French vocabulary.
Lexique 4.00, by Boris New, Christophe Pallier, Gauvain Schalchli, Jessica Bourgin, Manuel Gimenes and contributors. Word-form frequencies are grouped by lemma, so conjugations contribute to the base word’s frequency. Names, fragments and words without usable dictionary meanings are excluded. The first 5,000 eligible words are selected. Licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
New definitions are adapted from English Wiktionary and its contributors, extracted by Tatu Ylonen’s Kaikki / Wiktextract. Source dump: 2 September 2026; extraction: 25 September 2026. Each core word’s history includes a link to its dictionary entry and contributor history.
Definitions have been selected, shortened, deduplicated and occasionally edited for flashcards. Pure inflection references, obsolete, rare and regional senses are filtered out. A sample was reviewed; the entire deck has not received a professional bilingual audit. Words can have additional meanings depending on context. Original starter translations remain editorial entries.

Short dictionary-authored French examples and their English translations are adapted from the same Wiktionary snapshot under CC BY-SA 4.0. Published quotations and cited excerpts are excluded. Some common words have original editorial examples and usage notes written for Solveig. Examples currently cover 1,457 cards; they are omitted where no suitable pair is available.
Retained expression priorities originated in Solveig’s starter deck. Its word-form ranking used Hermit Dave’s FrequencyWords French 2018 list, derived from OpenSubtitles. The list content is CC BY-SA 4.0; its generator code is MIT.
